In the city of Zanesville sits the world’s largest bronze sculpture studio, of any living artist. This working studio also serves as an art gallery that is open to visitors with a small donation
encouraged.
Visitors can see the artist Alan Cottrill and his staff produce life size and larger bronze statues. Cottrill’s works have been placed throughout the world and Ohio, and he was chosen to do a statue of Thomas Edison which is featured in Statuary Hall of the US Capitol Building.
Through the HEART of Appalachian Ohio Project, the studio and gallery will be enhanced allowing visitors to see every step of the process and the cutting edge techniques of blending ancient and modern technologies to create bronze masterpieces.
The practices currently in place combined with the improvements to the studio made available through the Appalachian Community Grant and the HEART of Appalachian Ohio project will make this studio one of twelve places in the United States that is capable of such work. This will place Appalachian Ohio among the leaders and at the forefront.
Additionally, the studio and associated Coopermill Bronzeworks Ltd. will be open to the public and modified to make visiting more user friendly. The technology funded through the grant will also be available for the public to utilize and will greatly assist in beautifying and interpreting the rich cultural history of Appalachian Ohio.
